Infrastructure or equipment

The PITHIA-NRFSGO team, operates pulsation magnetometer network, KAIRA Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array and riometer measurements from Sodankylä.

Pulsation magnetometer network has stations in 8 locations: Kevo, Kilpisjärvi, Abisko, Ivalo, Sodankylä, Rovaniemi, Oulu and Nurmijärvi.

KAIRA, the Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array is a dual array of omnidirectional VHF radio antennas located near Kilpisjärvi, Finland. It is operated by SGO. KAIRA makes extensive use of the proven LOFAR antenna and digital signal-processing hardware, and can act as a stand-alone passive receiver, as a receiver for the European Incoherent Scatter very high frequency (VHF) incoherent scatter radar. KAIRA has acted as a path finder for technologies to be used in the EISCAT 3D phased-array incoherent scatter radar system.

Riometer measurements at Sodankylä began in 1970, and now SGO maintains the entire Finnish Riometer Chain including stations in Kevo, Abisko, Ivalo, Sodankylä, Rovaniemi, Oulu and Jyväskylä.  The data produced include pulsation magnetometer data, KAIRA measurements and riometer data.
