Dr David Altadill
David Altadill is the director of the OE since 2013 and associated professor at the Ramon Llull University (URL) in the University Institute Observatori de l’Ebre (OE) since 1997. He received his BSc in Physics in 1991 and his Ph.D. in Physics (Geophysics) in 1997 at the Ramon Llull University (URL), Spain. His research lines focus on analysis, monitoring and modelling of the Terrestrial ionosphere, especially the solar and geomagnetic forcing on the ionosphere and the dynamic coupling of the mesosphere/thermosphere/ionosphere. He has been working at the OE since 1994. He was awarded as grant holder of the Ministry of Foreign of Spain to perform a research stay in the Geophysical Institute BAS in Bulgaria (1992/10-1993/06 and 1993/101994/01), he was stipendiary in France TELECOM in Lannion (France), and visiting scholar in the Center for Atmospheric Research of the University of Massachusetts in USA (2006/08- 2007/07). He has contributed to 9 international research projects aiming at ionospheric monitoring and modeling: 4 European COST Actions (238-PRIME, 251IITS, 271-EACOS, and 296-MIERS), 2 NATO (INTAS-03-51-6425 and SPS (EAP SFPP 984894)), 1 USA Air Force (AFRL_FA8718-L-0072), 1 European Commission (HOME/2010/CIPS/AG/026) and 1 ESA (ITT 1-8151/14/NL/LvH). He has also contributed to 12 projects funded by National Spanish agencies (being IP for 3).
He is currently involved in the TechTIDE project (H2020-COMPET-2017, GA 776011) that aims at design and test new viable mitigation strategies of the impact of the Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) on the Technologies affected by the TIDs and to develop a pre-operational system for real-time tracking and warning of TIDs over the region extending from Europe to South Africa. He is the leader of WP2 of TechTIDE that develop improved methodologies suitable to support for the first time the direct, real-time identification and tracking of TIDs over wide world regions.
He has been member of the Management Committee of the European actions COST271 and COST296 and current Chairman of the URSI-COSPAR IRI TG.
He is the author/co-author of 94 papers in peer review journals (76 into the SCI) and over 150 papers in meeting (19 “invited/solicited”). He has currently over 1000 citations, (over 800 of them into journals of the SCI). He has 4 six-year research periods (19942017) positively evaluated by Spanish Agency of Quality of Research. Two of his works were selected as “AGU Editor’s Choice on Space Weather” and the results of one were cover page of Radio Science.
In PITHIA-NRF contributes in WP1, WP2, WP3, WP5, WP6, WP7 and WP8 with an allocation of 20% of full-time employment.
